There are few things quite as merry and magical as a Christmas tree decked out with holiday ornaments. Whether your collection features ornaments that are personalized, vintage-inspired, or even movie and TV-themed, seeing them all hanging on your tree is sure to get you in the Christmas spirit.

But a traditional tree isn’t the only way to display ornaments. In fact, there are plenty of ways to get creative with your collection of holiday baubles – and we’ve put together a list full of them!

Creative Ideas for Displaying Christmas Ornaments

Are you looking for out-of-the-box (or should we say off-the-tree) ideas for ornament displays? Try one of these unique ways to decorate with Christmas ornaments this year instead of keeping your extra ornaments in storage.

Create an ornament wreath

Why not spruce up your Christmas wreath with a mix of ornaments and decorative elements? It’s a fun way to put a special spin on a standard wreath while also getting crafty for the holidays. You can even get the whole family – or your friends – involved with a wreath-decorating party!

Here’s how to make a Christmas wreath that’s decorated with ornaments:

  1. Start with a classic, green artificial wreath. Using faux greenery will allow you to hang it up year after year instead of having to retire it after one holiday season. The specific style is up to you, but Colorado spruce, cedar, pine, and Sherwood are great options.
  2. Now, it’s time to add some lights. If you’d like, you can select a pre-lit wreath for an effortless glow. Or, you can weave a string of battery-operated fairy lights with a timer so that the wreath will illuminate right as the sun goes down.
  3. If you’d like to include a few cheerful bows, simply pick a festive ribbon and use a hot glue gun to attach the bows wherever you’d like.
  4. Your final step is also the one that’s the most fun: choosing and attaching ornaments! Depending on the final look you’re hoping for, there are so many different ways to approach this creative project. For example, you might choose simple, colorful glass bulbs for a timeless and traditional result. Or, you can use retro Shiny Brite Christmas ornaments for a wreath that is a nod to holidays past. Themed ornament wreaths can be designed to suit your personality, a certain hobby, or even your home décor – and they make a wonderful gift as well.

Glass jars filled with ornaments

Are you searching for Christmas centerpiece ideas? Or maybe you want to add a touch of holiday sparkle and shine to a mantel, an entryway table, or anywhere else in your home. Basic glass vases, filled with Christmas ornaments, lights, and other elements, are a one-of-a-kind holiday decoration you can completely customize.

Odds are, you already have at least a few clear jars or vases in a cupboard somewhere, so you may not even need to buy those. Various sizes and shapes will work for this Christmas craft project.

Once you have your vases ready, it’s as simple as filling them with your choice of ornaments and décor. You might choose mercury glass ball ornaments in a rainbow of colors, or you could make DIY Christmas décor jars based on a certain theme. If your jars are small, mini glass ball ornaments are an ideal option.

Battery-operated fairy lights, faux snow, and even greenery are all elements you can use as well. Get creative and have fun – this is holiday décor you can recreate year after year!

Decorate a garland

Garlands are a staple of seasonal décor, with styles ranging from simple greenery with a scattering of berries or pinecones to flocked garlands complete with lights. Whatever style you choose, attaching ornaments is a wonderful way to create your own signature look.

You could create a garland centered on a certain theme, like “winter wonderland,” holiday baking, or forest animals. Or, if you really want something that makes an eye-catching statement, you could thread vibrant glass ball ornaments on a long piece of beautiful tulle or ribbon for a DIY garland that’s all ornaments.

Hang ornaments from a dining room chandelier

If you have a chandelier above your dining room table (or in your entryway or anywhere else in your home), you can dress it up with some beautiful, shiny ornaments.

Thread each ornament on a ribbon instead of a standard hook since the ribbon will be visible. Then, just hang the ornaments from the various pieces and parts of the chandelier. Depending on the style of your light fixture, you can keep it minimal or go all out. Shiny glass ornaments, such as mercury glass, will reflect the chandelier’s light and have a stunning effect.

Pretty up your windows

Many people place faux candles in each of their windows during the Christmas season for décor that can be enjoyed by those inside the home as well as passerby. Hanging ornaments inside a window (especially the windows that face the front of your home) are another way to achieve a similarly festive result.

All you’ll need is an invisible fishing line or colorful baker’s twine and the ornaments of your choice. String them up at alternating heights, securing the top of the string to each window’s inside frame or trim. You can create patterns with colors and shapes and even add a string of lights to make them glitter and glow.

Mini trees or “feature trees”

If you love the tradition of a holiday tree, you could always opt to bring one or two extras into your home.

Depending on how much space you have, you might find that a small, three-foot tree is ideal. For example, consider a small Christmas tree for children’s bedrooms, playrooms, or even decorating dining room sideboards, kitchen counters, and other surfaces. If you have enough room, a standard-sized tree is always an option.

You could decorate these additional trees just as you would any other, or you could tap into your imagination to really create something unique! Themed Christmas trees have become hugely popular, and the possibilities are truly endless.
