Make your holiday gifts extra special this year with personalized ornaments from St Nick’s Christmas & Collectibles! Whether you’re using fabric, paper, or boxes, you can easily learn how to properly wrap a present with these helpful tips.

One of the best parts of giving a present is using festive wrapping paper to add an element of surprise and anticipation to the experience. Imagine a tree surrounded by presents without tags or Christmas wrapping; it wouldn’t be the same.

Knowing how to wrap a present properly can be useful on many occasions, such as celebrating someone’s birthday with their favorite colored gift wrap, adding a luxurious touch to a graduation gift with glittery paper, or making the holiday season more cheerful with Christmas-themed wrap. To add a special touch to your gift, consider ordering a personalized ornament from St. Nick’s Christmas & Collectibles to replace the standard gift tag.

How to Wrap a Box-Shaped Present Like a Pro

Most wrapped gifts, such as books and photo frames, will be more or less box-shaped before you wrap them. Even rounder items, like many of our Christmas ornaments, often come in boxes. Boxes make them easier to wrap and, as a bonus, intensify the recipient’s surprise.

Once the present is in a box, you can start wrapping it. Thick wrapping paper is ideal. It can be easier to make precise folds if you use Christmas or holiday wrapping paper with grid lines on the back. You’ll also want sharp, comfortable scissors and high-quality tape. Double-sided tape can make the process easier, and we like to use invisible tape designed for gift wrapping to hide the strips.

Get a matching gift tag, or elevate your present with a personalized ornament that fits your recipient. Lastly, decide how to embellish the present, such as with a ribbon or bow. Collect your gift and all your materials and find a large, flat area for gift wrapping. A table is ideal, but a large section of hard floor can also work well.

First, lay out your wrapping paper and place your present upside down on the sheet. Pull one end of the paper tightly over the present, fold an inch over the top, and tape it to the present, creasing the corners. Loop the gift wrap roll over the top, cut the paper away, and pull the other end tightlyover the present, taping it to the first end and creasing the corners. Fold the sides and tape them to the present, then attach a gift tag and add any additional decorations.

Once the paper forms a tube around the box, close off the ends, push the corners you’ve created inward, creasing at a 45-degree angle, and fold these new “flaps” around the present. Fold or cut away any excess paper at this stage. Then add your favorite adornments, and you’re done!

How to Wrap a Cylinder-Shaped Present Like a Pro

The other most common shape for presents is a cylinder. You’ll need Christmas wrap, tape, and a tape measure for this. Measure around the circumference of your cylinder, and add four inches to that figure. Then measure the diameter and the length of the cylinder, and add these numbers together. Cut a rectangle of Christmas wrap or tissue paper in these dimensions. The gift wrap’s width should be the cylinder’s circumference plus four inches, and its height should be the sum of the cylinder’s diameter and length.

Place the present in the middle of the gift wrap, and wrap the paper along the round side. Tape it shut, then twist each end (like a piece of wrapped candy). From there, you can add any embellishments you’d like, and then your gift is ready to give!

How to Embellish Wrapped Presents for an Extra Special Gift

The little “extras” are what can make your Christmas present extra special. You can make a big impact with stickers, decorative ribbons, bows, glitter, and even personalized ornaments. Keep reading for a few ideas to embellish your wrapped presents.

How to Tie a Ribbon Around a Box

Whether you use plastic or fabric ribbon, use double-sided tape to tack it down. If you want to have two lengths of ribbon without creating a “lump” at the bottom of the gift, use separate lengths instead of a single long one. If you tie your bow, try using a wired ribbon.

Things to Make Your Gifts Stand Out

Be creative with materials! You can wrap small presents in bandanas or scrap fabric without cutting them. Add small ornaments, bottle brush trees, or candy canes for extra flair. Design your own Christmas wrapping on butcher paper with special stamps and paint!

Gift Wrapping Pro Tip:

A personalized Christmas ornament can be used as a label for your gift, making it extra special. It adds a personal touch and can be a keepsake that the recipient can hang on their tree for years. It shows that you put thought and effort into the gift-giving process.
