Panda Bears once had pure white fur according to ancient legend. One of the Panda’s best friends was the youngest girl of four sisters and they often laughed anf played together. One day a hungry tiger crept up on them. The tiger was about to eat the panda, when the young girl rushed to stop the attack and instead was killed herself. The panda was so distressed that it rubbed black ashes on its arms and legs as a sign of mourning and cried for a long time, rubbing its eyes with its paws. From that day onward, the panda has had black rings around its eyes. Until the year 2 A.D., the panda was considered semi-divine in China. Chinese emperors often kept rare beasts in the palace gardens and the most treasured of these were the pandas. The Chinese poet Bai Juyo wrote that the panda had magical powers that could ward off evil spirits and natural disaters and prevent disease.
